The competition moved to the interaction layer
Another example of how fast the news moves.
Just two days ago I spoke with Globes about the Windsurf acquisition at 3 billion dollars, a move that signals OpenAI's shift into enterprise, with the intent to control the interaction layer between users, in this case developers, and the models.
24 hours later, OpenAI announces an even bigger acquisition: 6.4 billion dollars for IO, the company founded by the legendary designer Jony Ive. A move that marks further expansion into consumer electronics, aiming to shape how AI integrates into the physical world.
So what does it mean? As I told Globes, the competition is no longer only over the smartest model, but over who holds the layer through which models are actually used. And now that gets reinforced in the physical world.
And these deals sharpen a big question: is AI's promise to make the technology world more open and competitive actually materializing? Or are we watching a rapid return to an era of deep consolidation?
