Stripe Is Buying the Door to AI
Stripe is in talks to pay $10 billion for a three-year-old company. Google made this exact move in 2005, and it became one of the best acquisitions in tech history.
In 2005, Google was a search company that saw the world going mobile. Whoever controlled the new form factor would control where search lived. So Google bought Android for around $50 million and gave it away for free. The OS wasn't the product. It was the moat.
Stripe is a payments company, and the world is going to AI. The models hold the power, but the router decides which model runs and at what price. That's OpenRouter: the switchboard of the model economy, millions of developers routing across hundreds of models.
The real prize is underneath: payments. Stripe can become the checkout of the intelligence layer, the rails on which companies pay the model providers. Google gave Android away and took its cut through the Play Store. Stripe can give routing away, even open-source it, and take its cut on every token bill that flows through.
Why Stripe and not a model lab? A router has to be neutral. The day a model provider owns it, that promise dies. Stripe doesn't field a team, so it can own the referee.
2005: a search company bought the door to mobile. 2026: a payments company is bidding for the door to AI.
The AI era won't be won only by AI companies. Some of the sharpest winners will be pre-LLM incumbents converting the position and resources they built in the last era into control points in this one. Stripe isn't buying into AI. It's making AI run through Stripe.
